Exposed services

Computers communicate through services (ports). Exposed services could be potentially exploited by a threat actor and therefore increase the overall attack surface for the device.

Based on research and cyber trends, Forescout maintains and updates a pre-defined network services table where each service displays the following data:

  • Service Name, for example, SMB
  • Port Number, for example, 445
  • Protocol, for example, TCP
  • Potential Exposure:
    • Control: Intruders can potentially gain partial or full control of the host.
    • Access: Intruders can potentially collect or gain access to information about and from the host.
